What’s a Mini Session (And Why You’ll Love It)

If you've spent any time browsing photographers' websites or Instagram pages, you’ve probably seen the words “mini session” pop up here and there. But what exactly is a mini session—and is it right for you? Let’s break it down!

Mini Sessions 101

A mini session is a shorter, simpler version of a full photography session (see examples of my full family session packages here). Think of it like a bite-sized photoshoot, typically lasting between 15–30 minutes, with a set number of edited images included. It's quick, fun, an\d perfect for getting a few beautiful, updated photos without committing to a longer session or higher package rate.

In Seattle, I tend to hold one mini session event in the spring or summer and then multiple mini session days spread throughout different locations in the fall as families prepare for sending out holiday cards. (The best way to find out about these events in advance and make sure to snag a time slot that works best for you is to sign up to my mailing list—I always announce session details there first!)

why book a mini session?

  • Quick and easy: Mini sessions are often an attractive photo for families, couples, or individuals who just want a few amazing shots without spending hours in front of the camera.

  • Lower cost than a full session: Because they take up less time than a full session, and I can group several sessions together in one convenient day and place, I offer mini sessions at a lower price point than traditional sessions.

  • Interesting themes or settings: Photographers often offer mini sessions during certain seasons or events—like fall foliage, holiday card season, spring blooms, or even back-to-school. While I personally don’t do cutesy (you’ll never see me offering a gimmicky backdrop or cheesy props), I do often tie in seasonal elements to the mini shoots I offer in Seattle, such as holiday greenery installations in a studio or spring mini sessions amongst blooming tulip fields.

  • They can be great for kids: The keyword here is can. I often hear from families that they want to book a mini session over a full session because they think their kids will only cooperate for a short amount of time. While the idea of getting little ones to “sit still and smile” for a full hour can be daunting, in reality, that’s not how full sessions go. When we have more one-on-one time together, we also have more time for snack breaks, clothing changes, mood adjustments, and capturing candid moments of connection, not to mention more flexibility on when we begin and end. When booking a mini session, you’re locked in to a very specific, short window of time, so if they kids (or adults, I’ve seen it many times) aren’t in the mood for cooperating or are slow to warm up, we’re limited on what we can capture together. In short, there are pros and cons to both session types—it just depends on your preference!

What to Expect at a Mini Session

Mini sessions are often scheduled back-to-back at one location on a specific day. That means you'll show up at your scheduled time, get a little direction from the photographer, smile, laugh, maybe twirl around—and boom! You’re done. It's fast-paced but (fairly) stress-free—as long as everyone’s moods line up with your exact session time!—and you’ll walk away with a handful of beautiful, professional photos to treasure forever.

Mini session pro tips

  • Arrive exactly when you’re asked to (often slightly early), so you're ready to jump right in.

  • Keep outfits simple and comfortable.

  • Trust the process—photographers are pros at making magic happen quickly!
